 USB Power Delivery 3.1 Test

USB Power Delivery 3.1 (USB PD 3.1) is the latest specification launched by USB-IF
in 2021, aiming to improve power delivery capabilities of USB Type-C devices.

USB PD 3.1 Key Test Requirements & New Features

Extended Power Range (EPR)
USB PD 3.1 expands maximum power supply from 100W to 240W,supporting voltages
up to 48V and 5A

Fixed Voltage Option
Added fixed voltage options of 28V, 36V, and 48V to support higher power devices

Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS)
In EPR mode, the voltage output can be adjusted within a range from 15V to 28V, 36V,
and 48V depending on the power requirement

USB Power Delivery 3.1 (USB PD 3.1) Testing Process

Equipment Preparation
Connect the unit under test (UUT)to test equipment (such as Ellisys Explorer 350®)and
setup the host and control system

Protocol Testing
Check device compliance with USB PD 3.1 protocol, including extended power range (EPR)
and fixed voltage options (28V, 36V, 48V)

Electrical Testing
Test the device's performance under different voltage and current conditions to ensure it can
safely deliver up to 240W of power

Security Testing
Includes overvoltage, overcurrent and overheating protection testing to ensure device safety
during high power transmission

Compatibility Testing
Ensures devices can seamlessly interoperate with other USB PD 3.1 devices and supports
dynamic voltage scaling

USB Power Delivery (USB PD) Certification Process

Step1  Apply For Registration
Brand companies must obtain a USB Vendor ID (VID) and register an account on the USB-IF
website for product registration

Step2  Submit Test Samples & Product Information
Applicants need to submit test samples and related product information for testing

Step3  Test Process
Products will undergo a series of tests at authorized independent testing laboratories, including
protocol testing, electrical testing, safety testing and compatibility testing

Step4  Get Test ID (TID)
After passing the test, the product will be assigned a Test ID (TID), which is proof that the
product complies with the USB-IF standard

Step5  Certification & Logo Use
Products that pass testing and receive TID can be marketed using the USB-IF certification mark
and be included in USB-IF’s consolidated list

These steps ensure high performance and security of USB PD devices and promote
standardization in the market
